Dr. Joan MacCracken, has worked with children for over twenty-five years as a practicing pediatrician specializing in endocrinology. Even before that, as a camp counselor for five summers, and later as a mother she played with and taught children to explore their natural world and search for their own creativity.
Writing has been one of her creative outlets. In 1996 she wrote and published her first book, The Sun, The Rain, and The Insulin: Growing Up with Diabetes. Families, school nurses and diabetes educators praised its readability and educational style. |
Since her retirement from practice in 2000, she has traveled to the northeastern coast of Nicaragua and assisted the medical teams of Partners in Health of Maine. She became captivated by the curious and beautiful children there and discovered the great need to improve children’s literacy. Her latest book, Trisba & Sula, published by her own small publishing company, Tiffin Press, is a fund-raiser for the literacy fund that she has established for the children of Nicaragua.
She currently lives on the coast of Maine with her husband and dog, Henri.
